my 2000 grand am has a engine light on and when you rev it ut to 4000 rpm it won' increase any more, or when you reach about 50 mph it seems to hesitate.

With the check engine light on it means you have a failure in the engine control system that could create an emission failure. Yuo will need to have the codes retreived in order to properly diagnose this. If you go to AutoZone they will retreive the codes for you at no charge and you can let me know what they are and we can try to get this hesitation and light diagnosed for you. As for the cutting out once you hit 4000 rpm. This is normal. All new cars have built into the programming a rev limiter which prevents the engine from going over 4000 rpm's This prevent engine damge from someone just mashing the pedal to the floor.
