a 1996 plym Neon 2 liter SOH has a ploblem with engine

Sent to Car Experts March 30, 2006 7:20 a.m.

a 1996 plym Neon 2 liter SOH has a ploblem with engine shutting off when driving. Car will resatart only if you pull over and cycle the ignition. The problem occus typically when over 30 mph but has done it while backing up.i removed the PCM to check for loose, corroted, or broken wires but did not find any. The problem was worse after reinstalling the PCM. Ther are two error codes for the onboard Diagnosis (OBD-II).Code 12 Problem with the battery connection. Direct battery input to PCM disconnected within the last 50 key-on cycles.Code 32 an open or shorted condition detected in the EGR solenoid circuit. Possible air/fuel ration imbalance not detected during diagnosis. Note code 32 has been on for two years.Something I haven't gotten around to fix.The car has 110k miles. new head gasket&timing belt two years ago. Recent new spark plugs&wires.Any suggestion why the car quits while driving. The car quits quick like turning off the key.

Optional Information:
1996 Dodge neon 2.0 SOH

Already Tried:
new sprk plugs & wires. Remove PCM checking for corroded, loose, or broken wires

REPLIED Check Mark

welcome to JA,

I have seen a faulty ignition switch and a Cam position sensor cause this type problem. I would never have thought the cam sensor would do it. I would also check the battery cables on both ends for good clean connection and the chassis ground wire. A bad ground will cause this.

If this helped, an accept would be appreciated. If more help needed pleas ask.

How do you check ignition switch(or do you just replace)?Whould't you get an error code for the faulty Cam Posistion sensor? Code 54 No camshaft position sensor signal from distributor. The batt. cables are good at the batt. and fuse box. I will check the other end.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

With the ignition switch you can try wiggling the key while driving and see if it interrupts the engine or makes it cut off. You would think that the cam sensor would set that code. I have seen one Dodge that was doing as you described and didn't set any code and one that set a P0057( air injector circuit high). This made no sense at all and was a pain to find.
