I own a 1997 catera and when I try to fill it up the pump keeps shutting off. It seems as if it is building up pressure in tank. Have replaced the breather tube on top of the tank, alHelpso the sensor and it still does the same. I am considering replacing the tank if I can't find another solution. 35,000 miles on it now.

Optional Information:
1997 Cadillac catera 6cyl 3.0

Already Tried:
replaced the breather hose from tank. Replaced sensor on top of tank. Checked electrical wires to sensor unit. (OK)Pressure builds up in tank when gassing up and spits gas out.

Car: cadillac catera 6 cyl 3.0, 35000 miles. Problem: I bought the car used, 21000 miles. When gassing up the pump nozzle will kick off sevweral times. I have to fill tank up manually very slowly. Some times pressure will build up and spit the gas back out. What have I done to try and fix the problem: Replaced the breather hose on top of the tank, put in a new sensor on top of the gas tank. Prayed numerous times but never lost my cool. My mechanic suggested we replace the tank neck, or the tank, run a snake down neck to check for blockage (not a live snake). Checked the wires to the gas tank sensor. Thanks!

Hi morgan,

Most often this occurs because the nozzle is inserted too far into the neck of your filler try leaving the nozzle just a few inches further out than you normally would while filling.
This is caused by the pump nozzle not your car!
when it senses fluid back flow or pressure changes, it automatically clicks off for safety purposes. The design of you filler tube is a factor however if you just leave the nozzle out an inch or two past where you normally insert it too it Will solve your problem I have had this experience with many of my own vehicles!
I hope this helps!! Good luck and let me know what happens ok?
