I have a 1999 Odyssey EX, V-6 3471 3.5 L SOHC, Automatic - Check engine light comes on and the codes read that it is a EGR valve problem. I have removed the EGR valve and cleaned it and vacuumed out th passageways and reset the code, when it is reinstalled the light comes back on.   It seems to run fine and I have not noticed any problems with the fuel economy. A ERG valve costs about $75. from Auto Zone. I hate to buy this part if I don"t need it. Is there any way to test the existing valve to see if it is defective or if some other component is causing the problem. I appreciate your help!

thank you for the question hope this helps

It is very possible the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid is bad.
But you should check the vacuum lines and electrical connections first before you think about replacing it

Anyway, I'm assuming the code is P0402 - EGR Flow Excessive Detected. What this means is the PCM has detected EGR gas flow at idle. The evident symptom in this case would be a rough idle and/or stalling.

One way to check The EGR valve is to disconnect the vacuum line from the EGR valve and plug the line. Then drive the car. If the problem is still there, it is a stuck open EGR valve. If it goes away, there is a problem with the EGR vacuum supply system.
