1992 Crown Vic: Had a cold start knock for a few weeks, ...

Sent to Car Experts March 01, 2006 8:24 p.m.

1992 Crown Vic: Had a cold start knock for a few weeks, the other day the engine "broke"? and began making a ratteling clanking noise. It continued to run and made it home, about 20 miles. The noise was not consistant with rpm, but it sure sounded like something broke. Neighbor believes its a crank/connecting rod bearing that went bad. Took the valve cover off and all the valves seem to be working okay. Sound is coming from lower end of motor. Should I go ahead and find a good used motor to replace. Thanks

Thanks for the question.

How many miles on the engine?

Does it have a miss now too?

Thanks

Motor has 145K miles. I didnt notice a miss, although when the engine first "broke"? it did seem to loose some power. I was traveling about 70mph at the time. There wasnt any indication of bucking? or missing. I did take it easy though on the way home, drove about 45mph. Thanks

What do you feel is an acceptable price to pay a shop for engine removal and install? Would it be too much of a headache to try myself? I do have a neighbor who has swapped engines in the past, although they were early 70's models... which I'm sure were much easier.
Thanks

I'm going to guess around 9-12 hours to replace the engine. Depends on what will need to be swapped over to the other engine, if the other engine would need a pan gasket, etc.

Thanks
