Question

1998 ECC problems HOT ONLY

Sent to Car Experts February 26, 2006 10:29 p.m.

The Problem Started After I Tried To Start My Truck When My Battery Died. Then I Put it On A charge And Since Then I Am Having hot air blowing from the heating/AC vents inside the passenger compartment even though the cold setting was selected. I changed the temperature controls unit on the dash to every possible selection, including AC. The only way can get the hot air to stop blowing is by turning off the fan switch and even then hot air still comes out. All other functions of the climate control work at different temp settings but always only HOT air comes out. I would like to know if anyone has experienced this problem (about the hot air blowing from the vent). I would like to know and I cannot find info if there is a bank of relays which control this function. I have changed the Dash control unit and that seems not to be the problem. The blend door was cycling at one time from hot to cold and now it quit. I used to hear all sorts of noise coming from the dash like doors and relays clicking and now nothing. I did the RDO fuse thing to reset the position of the door but no help.

I Havent Solved The Problem Yet.

Optional Information:
1998 Chevrolet Blazer 4.3l W

Already Tried:
Replaced Control Unit. Reset RDO fuse. Looked for codes but do not have the correct scan tool. Removed battery for an hour.

The blend door is operated by vaccum so somewhere in the system there is a vaccum line either broken or has come off.

This is a 1998 Chevy Blazer w/ Electr0nic Climate Control. The blend door is controlled by a electric motor. The control head unit is electronic no vacuum hoses attached. There are 3 vacuum dash pods and they are hooked up, also the rotted hoses to the ball on the fender has been replaced. I here vacuum operation correctly for the vent operation to defroster back down to the floor.

Well then the only other logical answer is that the electric motor is no good. Wouldn't you say.

There was clicking and movement of the door sort of cycling between hot cold and you could hear the door move slighty. I want to know if this system has a bank of relays which control this system. The motor on the blend door is not readly accesible to replace easily. In your original statement you said it was a vacuuum leak and I originaly posted that this was a ECC system. So are you guessing as to the fix or do you know that by replacing the motor will fix it and the motor originaly was cycling before all got quiet behind the dash board.

If this is true then why do I hear a clicking sound when I switch between the different vent door settings. I have never heard of a clicking fuse.

I'm sorry but now you have me stumped. I would suggest taking it to a dealer.

Relist: I want a different opinion.
It seems that this problem cannot be answered correctly by the experts since the last statement was for me to take it to the dealer and the last tech said he was stumped?

Ok i found the answer. I just made a phone call to a chevy dealer in my area to help me on this. The technician i spoke to said there is a control module called the ecc programmer. The programmer has been known to go bad in the blazers and when it does the temp will stay on one setting all the time. Also there is a group of relays for the system but he told me that 95% of the time it is the programmer that has stopped working. I don't want anyone to go away unhappy so i went the extra mile to find this out for you. If I was helpful please let me know how it works out.

I have changed that programmer twice and it did not help. I have found the electrical vacuum solenoid valve and I will go from there to the temp actuator motor and check that out.
But since this system is so complex my best bet will be to find a HVAC shop which as the scan tool which can simulate and control the system manually thru the tool. You know which scan tool I am talking about. The one which can test for the B-codes.

Thanks for your Help.
