The back left axle, it makes a horrible cuchuk cuchunk noise everytime I make a left turn. It is a standard 1997 Taurus, I am uncertain of the engine size, but can get back to you with the information later.

It is an automatic Ford Taurus. It is not a diesel. How much does a back axle run for a '97 Ford Taurus?

Definitely the rear. It has been occuring for the last few months, but lately it has gotten so a lot worse. Sometimes I look in my rear view mirror, b/c it sounds like a piece of my car has dropped off (I know it hasn't, but it sounds painful). I know my responses are somewhat vague, but any thoughts would be helpful.

Thank you again. Do you think, based on the sound (and when it occurs) that it is the front left axle that is the problem? Again, I'd appreciate an estimate on an axle replacement part?

If the sound is coming from the front left and it is only when you turn, this sounds like a bad CV joint. Most of the time it is more cost effective to replace the whole axle than to just do a boot and a joint.

As far as labor, it will take about an 1-2 hours to install times whatever the labor rate per hour is there in your area.

I've seen this part go for between $60-80 for a whole axle assembly.

You will have to tell whoever you puchase the part what transmission you have and engine and if it has antilock brakes or not.

Or if you want, if you give me the whole VIN# located on the drivers door pillar or on the door itself, I can look all of those up for you.

Thanks
