1987 Pontiac 6000
Sent to Car Experts February 01 06:31 PM

I have an '87 Pontiac 6000. First, it would lose power along with the speedometer going out. Then it would shake and idle very low. Then it would suddenly regain power and the speedometer started back working as I contiuned to drive for maybe 10 minutes. I have been driving it like this for about 2 weeks. Now it cuts off after about 10 minutes of driving and won't start-up again unless I let it rest for 2 or 3 minutes. Please help!! Any additional diagrams, pictures or web resources would be greatly appreciated.

Optional Information:

Already Tried:

In order to troubleshoot the problem accurately, some things have to be tested during the actual problem. Any other time and everything will check out good. Trying to diagnose this any other way amounts to guessing and that is just not accurate by any technician.

You need to first test a few functions during the failure.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester.
2) Test for injecter pulse using a small bulb called a noid light.
3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Here's what the noid light looks like.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: Thank you. I will test these things and maybe ask another question. I will try to increase the value next time. This car has a carburetor. Does it have an injector pulse?
