What would happen if somebody put something like sugar in ...

What would happen if somebody put something like sugar in your gas tank? What would the car do? My car is dying whenever I take my foot off the gas. When it doesnt die, and it's idlling it revs itself up. To restart it sometimes I have to push on the gas while I am turning the ignition and even then I have to put it into drive really fast, or it will die. Help?!
