Keeping an older ES300
Sent to Car Experts January 05 04:32 PM

My 92 Lexus has 265000 miles and presently need struts, cvboots and timing belt sevice among other things. I have replaced the gas tank as well as gas and brake lines. Also, have a couple of oil leaks. My question is whether or not to do the needed work or give the car up. It has been wonderful and still drives as well as most newer cars. Also what might go wrong in other areas (most commonly)? Really would not mind going for 5 or 6 hundre. Appreciate your help.

My concern is what type of things may go wrong after struts, cvboots, timeing/waterpump.
What sort of problems are most likely? I understand there is a possibility at any time but of what nature, Engine is strong, replayced air conditioning coil.

At 265,000 miles and after replacing brake lines, fuel lines and a fuel tank I feel that the exhaust system could be next and the transmission coolant lines.
You obliviously live in an area where either salt water or sand-salt is used on the highways to have so many problems with brake lines and fuel lines.
I cannot say exactly what will break next or project the cost and I do not think anyone else could fairly answer that question. A high mileage vehicle is as much as risk as a 90 year old person. I am being practical about the whole thing.
You asked if this is a good investment, to keep putting money in to this vehicle. My answer to that question is, NO.
You could keep this as a second car if needed but I would not depend on it much longer.
The most common problems at this mileage are:
Heater Core
Power Windows
Wiper Motor
Door Locks
Ignition Switch
Electrical Problems
The list goes on and on and the cost will go up and up...
Without knowing how well the vehicle has been maintained or how often the oil is changed I would prefer not to predict how long the engine will last.
