Question

jeep grand cherokee i was driving on the highway in

Sent to Car Experts December 29, 2005 11:28 p.m.

97' jeep grand cherokee: I was driving on the highway, in cruise-control, doing 80mph. Every time I would hit a slight incline, it would make a noise from underneath, more to the rear than the front. I'm thinking transmission(clutch, maybe), or rear-end. I turned around and hoped I could make it home(200 miles). I did. While driving home, this was the best diagnosis i could come up with. I figure I'm probably wrong. can I get some proffessional advise.

Hello, Malcolm!

Can you describe the type of noise you were hearing? Did it seem more related to engine load, or to vehicle speed? Did you notice any change when tuning or going around curves?

every time I would here the noise, it sounded like a short, slit-second, grinding. it did not effect speed. some-times it happened as I would pull off from a stop. I could not pin down exactly where it was coming from, but I think I can rule out the engine. It did not happen during curves, only during acceleration

ACCEPTED Check Mark

What you are describing could be a failing pinion bearing in the rear differential ( a very common occurrence on thsi model).

I would suggest checking the pinion bearings for any looseness; or even puling the front one out of the housing to check for any signs of overheating or damage. Jeep differentials commonly experience pinion bearing and differential carrier side bearing failures that cause similiar noises.

I hope this is helpful; if so, an accept would be most appreciated! thanks!
