Question

Jeep not starting

Sent to Car Experts December 28, 2005 4:10 a.m.

I have a 1993 Grand cherokee with 157500 miles on it. I keep it well maintained. However today I took it out for a drive and when I arrived to my destination it sat for a few hours while I did some errands. When I arrived back to my jeep and attempeted to start it it would not start, It kinda caught once or twice so I let it sit for a while thinking that I may have flooded it. Over several hours I attempted to start it, it would roll over and over but would not start. I checked the relays for the fule system and they appeared to be ok. I finally managed to get it started and it sounded like it was flooded, so I thought. I drove it home about (20 miles) and it ran very well I did notice that occasionally it would run rough like when you cross two plug wires or the timing was off ect. I got it home and before turning it off I gave it a few shots of gas. The engine sounded like it was outa sync it sputtered and choked and then reved ok when I laid off of the gas a bit. I did this several times and it did this 2 outa 3 times. The engine sounded like it was missfiring or like when you have water in your gas. I turned off the engine and then attemped to restart it again the engine would roll over and try to start but roughly. I am wondering if it may be the Crank position sensor or my fule pump I am on my second fule pump that I had installed about 3 years ago and I know that fule pumps can be quite notorious for causing problems and that when it comes to electric fule pumps they can go with out warning. As i said it was running excellent until today then nada.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The first thing you may try is to re-start it and fill the tank. If you got a tank of bad gas it could be the problem. Next check the fuel pressure. If it is low first replace the fuel filter, then re-check the pressure. The hope here is any problems in the fuel were of a nature that will pass through the system. If the pressure still fails to come up be sure purge your lines and replace the filter after replacing the pump.
