toyota tacoma x l transmission drain plug somehow backed

Sent to Car Experts December 24 06:33 PM

2005 TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4 3.4L Transmission drain plug somehow backed out and I appear to have lost some transmission fluid(approx 4" diameter puddle)Tightened plug but can find no dip stick for transmission or a refill plug.Appears Toyota has made it so the vehicle has to go back to the dealer for transmission fluid change? How do I verify the actual quanity of fluid lost and how do I replace it?

If this vehicle has an automatic transmission, I have to agree they hide the dip-stick very well. But believe or not it's there. Look under or around where the air-cleaner is, you'll find it. It's hidden below all those hoses and wires but its there.
I'm concerned about why the drain plug came loose. This vehicle is new, it is still under warranty and you should let the dealer take a look.

My goal is to save you money and time, I have a simple and logical approach for troubleshooting technical problems.

This vehicle has no dipstick and requires a special fluid as per this TSB.

Identification Procedure

The following symptoms will occur if non-WS ATF is put into a WS-compatible automatic transmission:

Non-WS ATF has a higher viscosity. Because of this, response to changes in fluid pressure decreases, lengthening shift time, causing shift flare.

When the fluid temperature is low, (approximately -40°F [-40°C]), air can enter the oil pump causing cavitation resulting in low fluid pressure.

Fuel consumption increases.

The following symptoms will occur if ATF WS is put into a non-WS-compatible automatic transmission:

ATF WS has a lower viscosity than other ATFs. Because of this, response to changes in fluid pressure increases, shortening shift time, causing shift shock.

If WS is filled into a non-WS automatic transmission, the fluid could leak out under high temperatures (approximately 284°F [140°C]).

Vehicles that use ATF WS can be identified by:

ATF dipstick is no longer installed.

WS" stamped on the refill plug.

Fluid level inspection:

Check the fluid level by inspecting for leakage. If there are no leaks present at time of inspection, the fluid level is correct.

For details about the ATF WS filling procedures (except Prius), refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair Manual: Automatic Transmission! Trans: Automatic Transmission Fluid (A750E/A750F).

For Prius, refer to TIS: applicable model year Prius Repair Manual: Hybrid Transaxle: On - Vehicle Inspection.

In the owners manual there is no reference at all to changing the transmission fluid or dip stick location.Check this URL http://www.carstalk.net/viewtopicp-1696015.html
seems to be many conflicting views.Let me know if you come up with any sure facts.Thanks.
