nissan maxima how do you know if the rea

1993 Nissan Maxima - how do you know if the reason for not heating up quicker and hotter is a heater core or a thermostat. Are these expensive to have repaired?

Optional Information:
1993 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl.

Already Tried:
nothing - afraid it is going to cost a fortune as I just spent $1500 on brakes, tire, front end, etc.

Actually it doesn't get hot enough on my feet even though the selector pointing on feet and it takes forever to heat up.

no it does not get hotter. Actually, if I move the selector to the 'upper' body it seems to be warmer, still takes a long time..but
