fuel problems

Sent to Car Experts December 17 09:04 PM

I have a 99 cadillac escalade. At the end of October the Fuel pump went out. I went to G.M. and bought a new unit and fuel filter and installed them. About three weeks later the fuel pressure line pushed off at the pump I went to G.M. and bought new lines pressure and return lines and new fuel filter and installed. Now I have an intermittent problem sometimes it will crank and other times it will just turn over and not crank. I noticed that I can't hear the fuel pump running when it doesn't crank. Then I may go back later and I hear the pump run when I turn the key on I it cranks and runs fine. I have left it just sitting and run for a hour plus and no problem. But the next day it may not crank. Any information on this problem will be a great help.

Optional Information:
1999 Cadillac escalade

Already Tried:
new fuel pump, filters, and fuel lines all G.M. parts

Would the regulator keep the pump from running even when I crack the inlet nut on the infeed to the fuel filter with the ignition in on position?

You should check for power and ground at the pump next time it won't start. When you replace the pump on that year and model it is very important to replace the wiring connector at the pump to avoid a repeat fuel pump failure. You could also beat on the tank when it won't start with a rubber mallet or a board and see if it starts. That would confirm the new pump is bad.The pump has a 12 month 12k miles warranty.

Where would I check the voltage? Do I need to drop the tank again to reach the connector on top of the tank or can I check it at the relay base? An if there isn't any voltage where should i go next? Please advise? When you speak of replacing the connector do you mean the plugin connector outside the tank or something internal the tank?

You will have to check for power and ground at the tank. The connector is the one at the tank that needs replaced. If you don't have power or ground let me know then we will know which way to go.You will only have power for 2-3 seconds when the key is turned on or contantly while cranking the starter. So get a helper to assist you.

Reply to Davo/diablo666's Post: I have contacted G.M. parts about a replacement Pump. They said it could be replaced at no cost to me. As you said they also said that the connector is being a problem. Is the connector something that I can unplug and plug in. I have no problem paying you. I trust your advise, but I would like to know how I can get back with you if I still need more advise? I went out and tried the cadillac and it cranked fine so I can't try what you suggested until it doesn't crank. Or can I try this reguardless of whether or not it cranks. I assume you mean for be to probe one end of my VOM into the connector and the other to Ground and read the voltage.

You check the voltage and ground in the connector itself. The connector comes with 4 crimp splices that will heat shrink to keep moisture out of the connections. If you need to get back to me just keep your question open or reopen it if needed.

So does that mean I will cut the Orginal connector off and slide the heat shrink over the wire and crimp and then heat shrink?
