ACCEPTED Check Mark

You are going to have to check for injector pulse, spark and fuel pressure during the failure. Then post with the results and we can go from there. It kind of sounds like a bad crank sensor maybe.

Cannot find where the crank sensor would be located on the '85 Thunderbird 3.8 engine, and couldn't find reference to it in the owner's manual or haynes manual.Could that also be the knock sensor, and could the fuel pum relay be part of the problem?

I'm sorry your car uses a pickup coil in the distributor instead. Those systems were famous for bad ignition modules. You still need to check for the above mentioned items. If you are only missing spark the module is the most likely cause. If you are missing injector pulse and spark the pickup coil is number one suspect. The pickup coil does the same thing as a crank sensor on newer engines.
