It idefinately out of time. Pull the #1 plug roll the engine by hand until you get the piston all the way up TDC -then pull your dist. cap and see where the rotor is pointing-should be pointing at the #1 wire spot on your cap-if not -turn the dist. Make sure of which direction the rotor is turning when you reinstall the plug wires. Tshoud get you really close to being in time.

i pulled the distributor and rechecked the timing like you recomended but it still spitting gas out of the carb. like it is backfiring still.
whats wrong? every time the #1 piston rolls to TDC the dist. is hitting the #1 electrode like it is supposed to. i changed the coil to make sure it was getting spark and it is. do you think the new carb. is the problem? it is a HOLLY #4150 600cfm Manuel choke carb. any tuning suggestions will be appreciated!

It very well could be playing a part in this. I suggest starting back at making double sure you are on the #1 and making sure you have some good dry plugs in there. If you can get it fired up then you can TWEEK the carb-but you will also need to get it timed closer by using a timing light if you have one. You may have all your plugs wet and loaded up with gas right now.
