2002 Ford Explorer - towing trailer, left turn signal & ...

Sent to Car Experts December 03 07:59 PM

2002 Ford Explorer - towing trailer, left turn signal & brake don't work. Trailer wiring is fine. Lights on SUV all meet on the right hand side, under the body panel, in front of the rear right brake & turn signal. There is no current/power going to or from this box. This gives us the thought that the left hand/trailer turn signal brake light is bad - but is there a fuse? In the Explorer manual, there is Relay #64 that deals with trailer left tow lights & brakes - we replaced this relay with a new one from the dealer. No go. We spoke to a trailer dealer & the Ford dealership and it sounds as though there must be a fuse somewhere - but none shown in the manual for the explorer. Help?!?!!!!

Look under the hood for a small secondary fuse box, not sure on your model, but the f-series pickups had seperate fuses for the trailer stop/turn lamps. Cant tell if the truck stop/turn lamps are working from your explanation or just the trailer inop.Sounds like just the trailer.Should say something in your owners manual if it uses a secondary fuse.

Okay - yes - there is a secondary fuse box but it's not a fuse - it's a relay. ( Apparently Ford has moved to running most things thru relays instead of fuses! ) That was relay #64 - and we've changed that already, and no where else in the manual does it list a separate fuse only for the left trailer towing turn signal/brake light. They've tested the yellow ( left turn signal/brake ) wire for the trailer - there's no current or power coming from the connection behind the right truck brake/light assembly ( behind the panel ), so the problem it seems it between the relay under the hood, and the wires back to this connection. Those wires cannot be accessed in between because they run in hte paneling, under the seats & trim, etc. Could it be another relay? Should we purchase wiring schematics? Thank you for your help!!
