99 chevy suburban blowing white smoke after changing the thermostat

Having trouble with it showing that it was running hot and then would be ok so it died a few times and when cooled off we brought it home.. Now when changed the thermostat it started blowing white smoke

What john said is where I was headed. You might want to check the coolant for water contamination as well. If you pull the radiator cap(when it's cold) and then start the truck, and there is noise or bubbles in the coolant, then it's the head gasket as John said.
