87 Crown victoria engine: There is an internal rattling/knocking sound coming from the 302 engine in my Crown Vic, it is noticeably noisy when I first start the car but goes away after the engine warms up. A friend of mine thinks it's the timing chain, I have to agree it does sound like the type of noise that a timing chain would make. The car only has 52000 miles on it. Should I be concerned about this or is this just a typical mechanical characteristic of the small ford 8 cylinder engines one that doesn't present any problems?

You tell me the noise is caused by one of the following two reasons, piston slap or wrist pin noise and I would certainly agree with that explanation if the engine from which the noise was coming from had a lot of miles on it but in this case the engine has only 52000 miles on it?

P.S. I read the "Just Answer" DISCLAIMER and it states that the general information offered as a result of my inquiry is for entertainment purposes, and not intended to substitute for informed professional advice yet your web site specifically states ASK THE EXPERTS so is the advise I received from you expert advise or not and if the advice given in response to mine or anybody else's question is only for entertainment purposes than shouldn't that have been made perfectly clear on your web site prior to a person's inquiry?

Sir;

You asked a question, and I provided you an informed, professional opinion. I am an ASE certified master technician, with 26 years of experience in engine repair and related diagnostics.

It is indeed VERY common for these noises to be present in Ford 8 cylinder engines at this mileage. If you take the vehicle in to your local Fords dealer for noise diagnosis, I am sure you will learn this to be correct.

I have provided you as accurate an answer as possible, based on the information you have provided, without being able to inspect the vehicle in person. Providing you the answers to your questions involves an investment of time and effort on our part to do the research required to provide you the best answer possible; and the payment you offered when you posted your question is how we get paid for our investment of time, cost of purchasing the repair data we consult to answer your question, and our knowledge gained from years of hands on experience and classroom training.

My answer is based on my experience and training, as well as searches of professional repair databases for related information. It is the best i can do for you. It is not intended as entertainment; this is how we earn our living. If you are searching for a free entertainment site, there are many of them out there on the web. If you are looking for an informed, professional opinion then this is the site for you.

RE: your engine noise:

My original answer is correct, you should check for the common causes of this noise in your engine (wrist pin clearance & piston slap). There is also a Ford TSB out on this model year for cold knock caused by excessive engine main bearing clearances (the cure is to replace the main bearings on the crankshaft if this is the source of the noise as determined by the listening procedure I recommended originally). I suspect this may not be the cause of the noise you are experiencing, because in my experience the main bearing clearance issues in these engines were present from the factory and usually if this is the source they knocked on startup since they were new,. You seem to have a new, recently occurring knocking noise you find unusual. there is a TSB (#92-18-6) detailing a knocking noise due to incorrect torque converter clearance with the AOD transmission causing premature thrust bearing wear on this engine. Usually though, this is described more as a metallic scraping sound with an intermittent knock, often warm.

A search of a database where professional technicians share repair information and diagnostic information turns up several mentions of the main bearing wear issue, as well as mentions of wrist pin and piston noise.

I hope this is helpful to you, and helps you understand that we DO provide a very inexpensive, professional service here; it is not a game site or for entertainment purposes.

If you choose to have the problem professionally diagnosed, and you find that my answer is correct, the honorable thing to do would be to pay the amount you offered for an answer to your question.

Thanks and good luck...

I have read your answers and it is clear to me now that you are sincere. Please forgive me if I came across as skeptical earlier it was only the disclaimer that caused my skepticism not your answer. I am impressed with your professionalism as a master automotive technician and I respect your expert analysis. This is the first time I’ve used your service, I stumbled upon your website purely accidentally. Your website is very impressive and I will refer it to my friends and family. I will except your answer but before I do could you recommend any type of oil additive that I could put in my engine to add extra protection to the internal components of the engine, would a thicker oil help?
