I have a 2002 Ford Windstar LX with a 3.8 engine and automatic transmission, the vehicle shudders when accelerating to pass or speed up, like the feel of a rumble strip on the road or as if you ran over something. I tried to identify the problem by purposefully speeding from a constant speed and it happens pretty regular. If I speed very gradually, it does not seem to be very bad, it is when I accelerate quickly to pass that it is most noticeable. It also seems to shift through the gears a little harsh. I also notice a "growl" from the engine area at lower speeds. I am not sure if this is just characteristic of this vehicle or if I have something that should be checked out. This is a new used vehicle for me, can anyone give me some possible causes for these issues?

Should I take this to the dealer or a transmission shop for dianosis?

When it starts to shudder keep the same amount of pressure on the accelerator and slightly touch the brake pedal(enough to turn on the brake lights). If the shudder stops the problem is in the torque converter clutch system. Have you ever had the transmission fluid changed? Most times this will take care of the shudder problem. If you change the fluid make sure you use what is indicated on the dipstick, which should be Mercon V. Ford has had problems with shudders on their vehicles for years. Depending on how your vehicle was driven Ford recomends changing the fluid every 30,000-60,000 miles. If your torque converter clutch itself is coming apart you could get a growl from the bell housing area. I would think a good transmission shop or the dealer either one should be able to take care of this for you. It depends on your preference and who you trust. Most dealers also have transmission specialist there to help out also.

After the transmission cleaning service the vehicle shifted better. There was still an issue with a shudder and hesitation that I finally fixed. The wires were leaking and the sensation through the steering was looking like the transmission. After a complete tune up the vehicle is driving great. Thanks for your input, it really helps to have a direction to pursue confirmed.
