I have a 1986 Toyota 4Runner (4 Cyl). I had to replace the timing chain on it and now I am trying to get it to start. I can get it to start but I have to have the gas pedal down to the floor to get it to idle and the idle is very very weak. When I let go the gas it dies.. HELP!!

How sure are you that the was insalled properly?Do you want me to post directions to be sure?Why was the chain replaced initially?For the same problem or broken or as PM?Are you sure you got the gaskets sealed properly?Was the distributor out?please describe in detail the issue at hand here.The simple answer here is that you are one tooth off.


20R, 22R, 22R-E and 22R-TE Engines

See Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18

  1. Remove the cylinder head and timing chain cover .

  2. Separate the chain from the damper, and remove the chain, complete with the camshaft sprocket.

  3. Remove the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump drive with a puller.

  4. Inspect the chain for wear or damage. Replace it if necessary.

  5. Inspect the chain tensioner for wear. If it measures less than 11mm, replace it.

  6. Check the dampers for wear. If their measurements are below the following specifications, replace them:

    • Upper damper: 5.0mm

    • Lower damper: 4.5mm

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft until its key is at TDC. Slide the sprocket in place over the key.

  2. Place the chain over the sprocket so that its single bright link aligns with the mark on the camshaft sprocket.

  3. Install the cam sprocket so that the timing mark falls between the two bright links on the chain.

  4. Fit the oil pump drive spline over the crankshaft key.

  5. Install the timing cover gasket on the front of the block.

  6. Rotate the camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to remove the slack from the chain.

  7. Install the timing chain cover and cylinder head as previously outlined.

You were very helpful. It turned out I needed to be TDC and have the distributor one notch over and it started.. I was able to drive it but I am going to fix the oil pan today,
