Question

I have a 98 Pontiac Gran Am and yesterday my battery

Sent to Car Experts October 23, 2005 10:47 a.m.

I have a 98 Pontiac Gran Am and yesterday my battery light came on. I drove around and the light stayed on. On my way home all of the lights such as Brake Light Oil Light etc came on and the headlights dimmed. Is it the battery, alternator, or something more?

REPLIED Check Mark

Typical bad alternator scenario.First check your fuses, then to verify bad alternator.Jump start engine and remove jumpers.Does engine stay running? If it does check the output voltage at the alternator.Should be 13.2 to 14V.if not ,Bad Alt.If you need instructions for replacing let me know. One thing I did not mention is to make sure the drive belt is on, and tight. That really goes without saying but you never know.Pleas list your engine size when you post back ( 3.1L etc.)

It's a 4 cylinder I believe either 1.8L or 2.0L, but I'll have to check
