what could be the cause of an oil leak all over engine

I have a 1995 nissan 200sx 70k miles never eany problems. My car stopped running todat. when I opened the hood I noticed oil all aover my engine.
everything comes on except the engine. I know it is not the battery. What could cause oil to leak everywhere??? HELP!!!
