I just asked a Question about how to access my fuel tank on a 96 900 saab I recieved most of the answer but I still need to know exactly where the access panel is located. My mechanic insists he needs to drop the fuel tank.

No access. The fuel tank has to be removed. Here are the instructions.

WARNING Removal of the fuel pump involves partial dismantling of the car's fuel system. The following points must therefore be observed in connection with this work:

- Work only in a well-ventilated area. If approved equipment for the extraction of fuel vapor is available, be sure to use it.

- Wear suitable gloves. Prolonged contact with fuel may give rise to skin irritation or dermatitis.

- Keep a class BE fire extinguisher near at hand. Be mindful of the danger of sparks caused by short-circuits and when connecting and disconnecting leads, etc. in electrical circuits.

- No smoking anywhere in the vicinity.

To Remove:

  1. Remove the fuel tank. See description of fuel tank removal. See: Fuel Tank
  2. Remove the screw ring from the top of the fuel pump. Use special tool 83 94 462. See: Tools and Equipment
  3. Lift up the pump until the top of it is about 50 mm above the fuel tank. Then turn the pump clockwise about 80 degrees and carefully remove it.

To Fit:

  1. Fit a new 0-ring in the groove in the tank.
  2. Carefully lower the pump into the correct position. Make sure that the marks on the tank and the pump are in alignment.
  3. Fit the screw ring in place.

Tightening torque for screw ring: 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

Important Inspect the fuel line 0-rings and fit new ones as necessary.
