I have a 2002 ford escape which seems to have a chattering lifter. It only does it after the engine warms up. I need to know if the lifter needs to be replaced or could it be something else.Ive heard many different possibilities.

Here is a Technical Service Bulletin from Ford regaurding these engines.

TSB 04-20-8

10/18/04

CAMSHAFT TICK NOISE - 3.0L 4V ENGINE ONLY

FORD:
2001-2005 Taurus, Escape

MERCURY:
2001-2005 Sable

ISSUE
Some vehicles equipped with the 3.0L 4V Duratec engine may exhibit a ticking noise from the left bank cylinder head, with the engine at normal operating temperature.

ACTION
To diagnose, with the engine running and warm, use a pry bar against the belt tensioner to increase and decrease tension on the water pump belt. If the noise changes, remove and reinstall the left bank intake camshaft caps. Refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

< cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=1> < vAlign=top> <>1. <>Remove the left bank valve cover. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 303-01B.

< vAlign=top> <>2. <>Rotate the engine clockwise until the # 6 cam lobes are pointing up (valves are fully closed).

< vAlign=top> <>3. <>Remove all intake camshaft caps.

NOTE THE CAMSHAFT CAPS MUST BE COMPLETELY LIFTED OFF AND THEN SET BACK INTO POSITION. LOOSENING AND RE-TORQUEING CAP BOLTS IS NOT SUFFICIENT.

< cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=1> < vAlign=top> <>4. <>Reinstall all camshaft caps and torque bolts in sequence shown in Figure 1, to 8 N.m (72 lb-in).

< vAlign=top> <>5. <>

Reinstall the left bank valve cover.

THE TICKING IS ALSO COMING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE.

Is there a possibility of the holes in the engine which feed the cam with oil could they be gummed up. Ive heard these engines are known for that.

Thsi TSB is only for the v6 model. I dont know if it could have the same problem on the right side or not. The drain holes could be plugged going down through the heads. What weight oil do you use. I do believe these engines are only supposed to have 5w20. If you use a thicker oil like 5w30 you run the risk of the engine not being lubricated properly. The only time Ive seen the holes plugg up like that is from using incorrect oil.

Sorry this is late. I was actually advised to use 10w30 and also a oil treatment to try and quite the lifter. I had 5w30 in it before the change and it was still chattering. The 10w30 was also synthetic. If the holes are gummed up is it possible to pull the valve cover off and clean them? Thank you for your previous advice I will be more than happy to pay again for future advice. I actually have just bought this escape less than a month ago and this problem is a major headache. so future advice will be much appreciated. I forgot ask also you said the tsb advised in the previous message was for a V6 did you mean V4? If so is there another way to troubleshoot a v6 for this problem.
