on the passenger side near the back of the throttlebody (TB) is the IAC, idle air control valve. it's a round black cylinder about an inch in diameter and 1 1/2" long, with a wire plug-in and a hex base. unplug the IAC and unscrew it (counter-clockwise) from the TB. make sure the pintle valve is still attached to the IAC. when cleaning the pintle valve do not rotate it, if you do, you will throw it out of calibration and have to go through a relearn procedure. using a good throttlebody cleaner,(not carb. cleaner) spray out the air passage in the TB. you may want to place a rag at the base of the TB to soak up the gunk that will wash back out. i have found that the best way is to soak the passage and walk away for a couple minutes, giving the cleaner a chance to soak in and break up the gunk. repeat this 6-8 times.
i own two GM products, a 97' C1500 and an 89' Caprice. i have to clean out the IAC about once a year on the 97' (61K miles)and about every 3 months on the 89' (150K).
hope this helps to solve your problem, good luck.
