brakes squeaking, now have a burning brakes smell

my brakes were sqeaking on and off when stopping. a friends said this is normal, break dust was the casue. I recently noticed a burning break smell when getting out of the car. It seems to be coming form the front breaks. How soon do I need to get this looked at? what might the problem be?
