worn out bearing sounding problem
Sent to Car Experts August 05 01:59 AM

I HAVE A 2000 F-150/W 4.2L V6 AND 57OOO MILES ORIGINAL. JUST RECENTLY THE ENGINE IS MAKING A NOISE JUST LIKE A BEARING GOING OUT. I REMOVED THE SERPENTENE BELT AND TURN THE ENGINE ON AND THE NOISE IS STILL THERE. I AM THINKING FRONT CRANK BEARING OR MAYBE PILOT BEARING. ENGINE RUNS PERFECT, IT DOESNT OVER HIT, NO LIFTER CLATTER, NO MISS. CHANGED THE OIL TO LOOK FOR ANY SCRAPS OF METAL, OR WATER, NOTHING. WHAT CAN I DO TO CHECK THE FRONT CRANK BEARING AND PILOT BEARING WITH OUT A TEAR DOWN. ALSO ANY TECHNICAL BULLETINS I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT. THERE'S ONLY 57,000 MILES. HELP

Those are flat. shim type, bearings and won't make a growling sound. You probably have more like a bad water pump or other belt driven component like the alternator or other pulley. Remove the belts and spin each pulley by hand looking for the problem.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: MR HAMMER TIME. DID YOU READ MY QUESTION CAREFULLY.
I STATED THAT I REMOVED THE BELT THAT TURNS ALL ACTIVE /MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT AND THE NOISE IS STILL APPARENT WHEN RUNNING THE ENGINE. PLEASE SUBMIT ANOTHER POSSIBILITY AFTER RE-READING MY QUESTION AGAIN.

The sound Mr Hammer Time is just as you had said.
It sounds almost exactly like the water pump bearing becoming worn, or a adjustment pulley bearing going out. If this crankshaft does not have roller bearings then what type of bearing does it turn off of.
I posiioned myself under the truck and sprayed some viscosity lube up in the front crankshaft bearing and was finally able to quite the sound down greatly, so I believe I am close. What is your perspective now ?. I am going to pull the pulley off and harmonic balancer off and get a better look in there.
Get back to me with your thoughts with your experience.

Thanks, Hope I did not offend.
