Question

96 BONNEVILLE TRANNY PROBLEMS

Sent to Car Experts August 04, 2005 8:32 p.m.

2 YEARS AGO I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT IN OUR 97 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE. 3 MONTHS AGO IT DEVELOPED TCC SHUDDER WHEN CLIMBING HILLS. THEY INSTALLED ANOTHER TORQUE CONVERTER, TCC SOLENOID AND A PWM SOLENOID. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED FOR ABOUT 1000 MILES.NOW ITS BACK TO SURGING ,SHUDDERING OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT. WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES IS WHILE YOU ARE CLIMBING A HILL YOU FEEL A SURGE AND THE TACH JUMPS ABOUT 200 RPM FOR A HALF SECOND OR SO. IT'S NOT THROWING A CODE. TODAY THEY JUST REPLACED THE TCC SOLENOID AGAIN AND WHEN I DROVE IT HOME IT WAS STILL DOING IT.ANY IDEAS?

REPLIED Check Mark

I would check the brake light switch adjustment before I went real deep into another transmission repair.Engine performance issues also need to be addressed as well.Any weak secondary ignition components will give the exact same symptoms as tcc shudder.A bad wire, coil or plug could be the actual cause of the problem.

I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT BEFORE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THE FIRST TIME AS TCC SHUDDER I HAD REPLACED PLUGS AND WIRES AND CHECKED MY COILS THINKING IT WAS A MISS UNDER LOAD. I ALSO REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER, THEN HAD IT RAN ACROSS A DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER AFTER FINDING NOTHING. THE TECH SAID IT SHOWED A CODE FOR THE TRANNY /TCC. THAT'S WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE TRANSMISSION SHOP AND THEY R&R'D THE CONVERTER AND SOLENOIDS. AS FOR THE BRAKE LITE SWITCH , WOULD THAT BE AN ISSUE WHEN CLIMBING A HILL?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Was there any corrosion on the coils when the wires were changed(black or white)?I would check real close for little black marks on the coil terminals also.As for the brake light switch maybe a bit of an angle is all it needs to flutter on and off.The shop should be able to watch the brake light switch status on their scan tool during the problem.Did the tcc code reappear? It's also very possible something in the transmission has failed.Turbine shaft seals, regulator valve in the channel plate, control valve, drive sprocket support etc.

I'M GOING TO CHECK OUT THE BREAK LIGHT SWITCH TOMORROW. I MADE SURE THE COIL TERMINALS WERE CLEAN WHEN I CHANGED WIRES AND USED SILICONE GREASE. AS FOR THE TCC CODE , IT HAS NEVER SHOWN UP AGAIN. ON ANOTHER WEB SITE THEY TALK ABOUT THE REGULATOR SPRING BEING WEAK CAN SOMETIMES CAUSE A PROBLEM LIKE MINE , BUT I'M NOT SURE IF IT APPLIES TO MY PARTICULAR TRANSMISSION. I'M AN ELECTRICIAN BY TRADE AND A PRETTY GOOD MECHANIC . I REBUILD ENGINES , SET UP REAR ENDS AND PAINT AND BODY, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, OTHER THAN PULLING THEM OUT OR PUTTING THEM IN I'M LOST.
