van will not start
Sent to Car Experts July 27 06:58 PM

I have a 2002 chevy venture van, it has had a problem starting. At first it was after filling up with gas, it would not start back up. Wait about an hour then it would crank, turn over but not start. But the last time I had just stopped to the bank and would not start back. But like before wait it out. The dealer said it might be the fuel pump but was not for sure, he said to hit the gas take if it did not start again, if it started then it was the fuel pump for sure. I tried this but it did not work. Any suggestions.

You need to first test a few functions during the failure.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester.
2) Test for injecter pulse using a small bulb called a noid light.
3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

There is a fitting in the fuel rail for accessing the fuel line. If you take the cap off, there is a shraeder valve, like a tire valve. Take a pen or something and depress that and see if there is any pressure. It would be better if you hold it open while somebody else turns the key on because it only runs for 3-5 seconds on every cycle. If you have no pressure when the key is turned on, call a tow truck because the pump is bad. Tha's about all you can check under those circumstances.

If it's the fuel pump, the tank has to come out of the truck. Not an easy job without the right equipment. If you do have fuel pressure, you'll still have to check injecter pulse with a noid light. At least one of them, maybe 2 has to be non-functional or it would be running.
