My 1989 Dodge Dynasty AC will blow air out the floor heating ducts and the defrost ducts, but will not blow out of the dash panel vents. How do I repair it to blow out the dash panel vents?

On this vehicle if there is no vacuum to the air flow doors the air comes out of the defrosters and the floor. This way the windshield will defrost and you can keep your feet warm. The first thinf you will want to do is to look under the hood for a vacuum line going throught the firewall to the inside of the vehicle. Once you find this vacuum hose follow it back to the engine and make sure it is not broken or disconnected. Most of the time the vacuum line gets brittle under the hood from the heat and cracks then breaks. If the hose is ok then you will need to check inside where it comes through the firewall and follow it looking for cracks and breakage. If you have vacuum to the controls then check for vacuum to the doors. Somewhere you will find no vacuum and that is where your problem lies. But like I said most of the time it is under the hood.

I can press the buttons and move the airflow to either the defrost or the floor. This seems to indicate that I do have vacuum to the controls but not the doors? Where are the doors located and are they accessable without dismantling the dash etc?
Thanks.

The mode door actuator is located behind the radio. If you remove the radio you should be able to see it.

  1. Remove upper and lower instrument cluster bezel.
  2. Remove radio assembly.
  3. Disconnect vacuum lines from actuator.
  4. Remove actuator attaching bolts.
  5. Through radio opening in instrument panel disconnect linkage and separate actuator from vehicle. To install, reverse the preceding operation.
