Explorer 4-Wheel Drive
Sent to Car Experts July 08 10:03 AM

1994 Ford Explorer 4-Wheel Drive.

Going straight, the 4 Wheel Drive appears to be working normal.

When I turn the vehicle feels like it is going to stall and grabs and rocks like only two or three wheels are turning and one is not.

I don't know that for sure but that is the way it feels.

How can I check the Four Wheel Drive? What am I looking for? and what are the probable causes ?

Is it possible that the self locking hubs were not installed correctly when the rotors were changed?

Your problem may be that the u-joints for the front axle are frozen. You have to check these joints if they are rusty around the rubber rings that is a good sign that you have a problem there .

To check your front hubs raise the front end off the ground put the truck in neutral and spin the tire and look inside the of the tire at the u-joint, if the u-joint turns and you can't hold it still with a bar the hub is not releasing properly. This is a good time to check the u-joints for binding also, have someone cut the wheel back and forth while you watch for binding, then with the wheel is turned slightly try to turn the u- joint (use a pry bar or tire iron so you don't get your fingers caught) If the joint does not turn freely you have a problem in the joint Turn it at least half way around because it might turn free at first and then get hard to turn.If it is hard to turn you have to replace the joint.
