Fan Removal for 1996 Chevy K1500 (1/2 ton)

How do you remove the fan assembly from a 1996 chevy k1500 truck? The manual says to remove the 4 fan to pulley bolts but this is incorrect. There is a large nut that looks like it needs to come off. When I remove the 4 bolts, all that happens is that pulley comes loose from the water pump but the fan assembly does not. I am trying to install a new water pump.
