That mechanic must have been checking it when the problem wasn't there. Define "there is nothing." Are the dash lights lighting up? Is it doing anything at all? Any noises under the hood?

Yes I mean nothing, turning the key and no noise at all although the temp. gauge shoots up to max. and the lights and stereo work fine. This happens after a short drive of maybe 15 minutes and then left parked for 15 to 30 mins. And I have had it towed to the shop 2 times when it has done this. If I leave it alone for a few hours it does start right back up when the engine is completely cold, and it happens a couple times a month so no predicting when or where. Any Ideas??
