Question

Fuel Pump/Electrical Issues

Sent to Car Experts May 28, 2005 11:59 a.m.

1986 Ford Ranger 4x4 V6. Truck tries to crank but doesn't stay idling. The Fuel Rely has burnt up twice in the last two weeks just trying to crank the truck. Is it one of two fuel pumps..thats what everyone is saying. If so, how do I know which one it is the one outside or the one inside the fuel tank and how do I test them when the truck won't crank. Could this be an issue with something else? Thanks.

The wiring diagram show the power and ground for each pump.Usually you can measure the resistance of the pumps to find the offending pump.In my experience the pumps usually measure between 28 and 60 ohms for a new pump. When they burn up relays they are usually way out of that range.I had a Dynasty that read 180k ohms and burnt relays.
