you may want to check your coil module if it is replacing it should be quick and the part is not expensive for those escorts i have an escort and it was very simular to what happened to me. i replaced it and everything was fine

There is not a module on the 2002 escort. It has a crankshaft sensor and a camshaft sensor but the manual I have says there is no module and the parts lists I have do not list a module.
