I am working on a 2003 Saturn Vue with a v6 engine. A dealer told the owners that the timing belt jumped and bent the valves. They swapped a used engine in then started it. The original engine was miss firing bad and the used engine is doing the same. Brought it to me to ckeck the timing belt alignment. I have not been able to find a clear diagram of proper alignment using the marks on the cam pulleys, back half of cover and the crankshaft. They claim they didn't remove the belt but there are 2 sets of marks on each cam pulley. I just want to be sure. . Of course, I get the car in its present condition with no prior first hand knowledge of why it ran poorly. If you dirct me to a diagram anywhere I would be grateful. Need to start some where.

I am also a mechanic. I have the process for changing the belt. I want a diagram or picture of the marks on a properly running engine to check to see if the belt on this Vue has jumped. There are 4 notches on each cam sprocket, I have found that I can line-up one notch on each cam with the notches on the back timing cover at the same time. With the engine in this position the crank notch looks like it is at 60degrees before the mark/notch on the timing cover.

I must not be making my situation clear. My question is: is there a pic. or diagram or method of checking the cam to crank timing on this engine with out removing and resetting the belt? Imagine this: A customer comes into your shop with a 2003 v6 Vue with 50000 miles on it. They are willing to pay your hourly rate to make sure the timing belt is right. The engine is running great, they want peace of mind. Would you completely remove the belt or line up the marks to check alignment?
