I have a 1991 Honda Civic. I have had the piston walls go dry and lost compression twice over the last year. I am guessing that there is a ring job in my future, but when it is running it runs well and burns no oil. My question is should I try a higher viscosity oil or maybe an oil additive?

Optional Information:
1991 Civic DX 1500cc

Already Tried:
Oil in the top of the cylinders....it works. Just looking for measures to prevent it from happening again.

hello JeffFox1,

welcome to JA. I agree that a ring job is on your future- I would recommend sooner rather than later to avoid having to have the cylinders bore due to the wear occuring when the dry condition happens. As far as additives - I've never been a fan of magic in a bottle fixes. I would use a Full Synthetic oil though-- this will coat those internal engine parts and may help. But get that ring job done before you do too much damage to fix.

good Luck
