Question

I am trying to remove the rear axles from a 1983 Datsun ...

Sent to Car Experts September 18, 2006 4:42 p.m.

I am trying to remove the rear axles from a 1983 Datsun 280ZX (Non Turbo). The Haynes manuals says to reomove the axle(s) from the wheel hub (which I have done) and then to remove the flange from the side of the differential where the axle(s) go into and to pry the flanges with a suitable pry bar. Well, have tried to do that, but I cannot reparate the axle(s) from the differential. The book says they should come right out, but they only travel about 1/2 inch and do not become loose.   The axles turns, etc, but it just does not disengage.

Is there a clip, ring, pin, etc inside the differential that keeps the axle connected ?    If so, then I will have to remove the rear differential cover which seems to be quile a lot of work.   Thanks.

Optional Information:
1983 Nissan 280ZX

Already Tried:
using a pry bar to pry the flange off.
