Chugging up I-95, in our Chrysler 300c, in 96 degree heat, and the air worked perfectly. We stopped for a sandwich, about 45 minutes, and resumed our travel. The air conditioning stiopped working, and the temperatures escalated to blowing hot air within minutes. We shut the air off, and drove for about an hour, and tried it again, and it worked perfectly.

What caused this, Is it a common problem, can I expect this to happen again? What can be done to prevent this? Is it a warranty covered problem?

It's most likely an electrical issue somewhere in the circuit.

It can be something like

The control head
pressure switch
compressor clutch coil
compressor relay
temp sensors
etc

If the car is still under a bumper to bumper warranty, then definately, it their problem to solve.

When you give vague descriptions you get vague answers.

The circuit has to be tested to determine where you have power and where you don't. Right now, you can't tell me that.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: What information relating to the incident have I ommitted that would be needed to clarify the discription of the proplem? I admit I am ignorant of the jargon, but suspect my car is not the only one that has ever encountered this problem. I am aware that Chrylser has a database that keeps an incedent record, and if this problem has been reported before, will have an issue category that lists the number incidents, techical issues and appropriate solutions. The answer I seek is a reference to Chryslers data that resolves these occurances.

It does have a bumper to bumper warranty, and am comfortable with it being 'fixed', but wonder if this is a systemic problem with the system that will re-occur after the warranty expires.

In other words, is this an engineering problem, or a mechanical problem. If it is an engineering problem, I need to dump the car. If it is a mechanical problem, I'd like to know that.

Your ansewer is still unacceptable, it blames the user and diverts attention from the question.

No, there is no data base that track failures or failure patterns. The manufacturer publishes Technical Seervice bulletins if there is a particular reoccuring problem that they may not be finding easily or if the car is under warranty, they will publish the way they want the problem handled to avoid excessive warranty claims.

I checked and there is only one TSB concerning your car in the A/C category and it refers to musty odors from the A/C. There's nothiing on electrical.

Electrical failures can be anything at all. untill someone starts testing the circuit and determines what is working and what isn't, nobody has any idea what is happening or what has failed or if there is any chance of it happening again.

Take your car to the dealer and let them find the problem.
