Question

2006 Dodge Minivan automatic transmissions

Sent to Car Experts July 18, 2006 2:51 p.m.

So, a Dodge dealer says its "damaging" and "not covered by warranty" to shift a 2006 model automatic transmission vehicle into neutral while vehicle moving. While I don't think it makes much SENSE to shift a car with an automatic transmission into neutral while moving, and may not be a safe thing to do, I find it hard to imagine what damage it might do, particularly for short time (5 seconds at 40 mph).

So, what is the source of the "damage" ?? Is this legitimate or smoke?

I'm OK with manual transmissions, flywheels and clutches, but auto trans has always been black box to me...

Optional Information:
2006 Dodge Minivan 3.8L

Already Tried:
swearing... Car won't go into reverse. All else OK.

Did you tell the dealer you shifted from drive to neutral while rolling?

I'm proxy mechanic for father in law who is the owner operator here, and yes, apparently he did...I was out of town on business...

Story I get is he was 'reaching for falling coffee mug'.

Possibility that he may have made it all the way to reverse, but ordinarily you have to get through the position detents rearward with selector, its not just a lateral move of position, so I doubt it...

This vehicle should be covered under warranty. We don't know if the detent failed to do its job. Take to a local dealer and tell them this vehicle lost reverse. Let them deny a claim and you can call the Chrysler Field Rep. in if needed. You can also get the Attorney Generals Office involved if need be. It's not how it happened it's broke, fix it! This is why we pay so much up front money, so we can sleep at night and have a good warranty.

Good Luck!

Dan
