Sent to Car Experts January 02 11:42 AM

My son has a '92 Chrysler LeBaron that the alternator belt keeps coming off and we have to tow it because the battery dies. The mechanic can't seem to fix the problem. He says it's when my son goes thru the snow and then it comes off. He has ordered a washer and it is on backorder but I just don't know what to do as my son needs this car for work. This all started when it was very icey and he went into the ditch last year. At first it was the serpentine belt and now it is the alternator belt. help!

Hello Gail
When your son ran in to the ditch it is very likely that something in the belt configuration got slightly bent. Just a small bend in the wrong direction will misguide the belt, which will result in the problem you are having. The mechanic should examine this configuration very carefully and see where the weakest point is, that would be the area to look at. Example being, tension pulley or attaching bracket. If you continue to have this problem, contact an authorized Chrysler dealer and consult with the service advisor. They sometimes know where the weak point is.
