I have a 1999 chrysler cirrus, the oil pressure light comes on whenever the car is stopped or the gas pedal is not being accelerated. Is this a major problem?

ENGINE OIL PRESSURE CHECKING

Check oil pressure using gauge at oil pressure switch location. Oil pressure should be 41 kPa (6 psi.) at idle or 241 to 517 kPa (35 to 75 psi.) at 3000 RPM.

  1. Remove pressure sending unit and install oil pressure gauge

CAUTION: If oil pressure is 0 at idle, Do Not Run engine at 3000 RPM.

  2. Warm engine at high idle until thermostat opens.

It may be a problem with the engine internally, however first check to be sure the oil pressure sending unit (switch) is not bad.

The sending unit is located near the oil filter it has 2 wires going to it. If it appears to be leaking oil it is probably bad.

If the pressure switch is ok then you will need further diagnosis.

I hope this helps if it did please accept.

Merry Christmas
