Question

engine problems w/ 94 chrysler LHS

Sent to Car Experts September 11, 2005 12:52 p.m.

I have a 94 Chrysler LHS w/ a 3.5 engine. The car had a serious knocking when i bought it . I was pretty sure what it was and that w/ a little work I could fix it. When I droped the oil pan the #1 piston rod at the crank shaft would slap back and forth w/ ease. I unbolted the rod end to find no bearing in either the rod or yhe rod end. Now I know I should pull the crank out and have it machined , but the rod , rodend , and the crank were still very smooth , but a little worn. so I put an oversized bearing in and did a plstigauge test and it seemed to be within specs so I put every thing bak together. and the knocking is gone but I still have a tick and that same piston is ( the #1 ) is not producing a power sroke . there is spark and Im pretty sure fuel , sense every other piston is firing. My question is what would cause this and would it be related to any thing I might have done? Im thinking it might be the camshaft and there is no air getting in the cylinder.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Do a compression test and make sure the cylinder can hold a volume of compression. This will tell you if the piston is damaged of if it is a top end engine problem. If the compression is low, squirt some oil in the spark plug hole(not a lot a few quirts)and see if it brings the compression up. If it does, then there is a problem with the piston rings collapsed/carbon. If there is no compression, you need to do a cylinder leak down test or look down the cylinder with a bore scope and see if you can see any damage.
