ran out of gas!
Sent to Car Experts June 09 11:36 PM

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee ran out of gas. I put two gallons in it but, it still won't start. What will have to be done to get running? How much will it cost?

Assuming that you have diagnosed the failure correctly, then the most likely possibility is a locked up fuel pump. The fuel pump on this vehicle is located inside the gas tank, and it relies on being submerged in fuel for cooling and lubrication. If it is run out of fuel, then teh pump can overheat and sieze up.

Try whacking the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallot or something similiar; sometimes jarriing them can make them operational again for a while. In any case, even if this makes your vehicle start, the pump is old and probably at the end of it's life and should be replaced if it is the cause of the problem.
