Truck problems
Sent to Car Experts March 28 12:06 PM

I have a 1996 GMC 4x4 1/2 ton automatic with a 5.0with 197000 miles. My problem is when driving about eight miles my check engine light comes on then after starting out from stop the transmission shifts hard into second. If I pull over shut the ignition off then imediatly restart the engine it shifts fine until the next eight miles. On my way to work the next morning the light goes out stays out until the return home after work then the cycle starts over with the light coming on and shifting hard. Also another problem that has recently come up is I get a vibration in the truck while driving, when i let off the gas or speed up it goes away. Hope you can help.

The check engine light means that the comoputer has recognized a problem and stored a trouble code to point you in the right direction. You need to have your computer scanned for codes. AutoZone will do that for free if you have one in your area. just don't let them diagnose anything. they are not mechanics. Just get the code # and post another question here with the number/s.

Reply to Tech501's Post: Had It done a couple of weeks ago when I had it inspected. They told me two codes came up, O2 censor and EGR valve. Was planning on replacing those next week. I didn't think they would have anything to with it. What do you think?

Don't assume that's what you need. Having those codes doesn't mean replace those parts. The code is telling you something specific about that system, not necessarily that that particular part is bad. That depends on what specific cod it set. You could have a problem with the EGR valve but the O/2 sensor is rarely the problem when you get an O/2 code. It's merely reporting the condition that it sees. Something else is usually causing that. You need to know the specific code number to get to the bottom of it. You also need a mor recent scanning. 2 weeks ago is old information and you need to know what's in there now.
