Windstar Transmission O/D
Sent to Car Experts October 25 04:00 PM

2000 Ford windstar SEL with 3.8L. Much beyond coasting, the transmission shifts out of overdrive. After a long trip the O/D light blinks but after sitting for he night, it has reset. It seems to be a little better when the engine is cold. Within the gears it seems to shifting fine but when on the highway with any pressure on the gas, it does not use the overdrive gear. So for the whole trip it is like having turned the O/D off. Any idea why this is happening and a possible fix?

Ford Windstar transmissions are notorious for acting up.  I suggest you go to the Center for Auto Safety Website and do a search for Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's) Recalls and Other Transmission-Related Postings regarding 'sibling' vehicles.

You may find a 'Campaign' or other Secret Warranty, or even a Recall that deals with your problem.

As a personal note, my 1995 Windstar has been sitting for about nine months waiting for my Fairy Godmother to appear with the funding necessary for a new transmission.Images available only to Customers.
