ETS AND CHECK ENGINE/ A/C NOT WORKING
Sent to Car Experts July 30 09:41 PM

I HAVE A 96 PONTIAC GRAND AM GT FOR FIVE YEARS AND I AM HAVING A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH IT. THE ETS AND CHECK ENGINE SIGN ARE ON AND THE CAR SHUGS WHEN I AM DRIVING IT. I HAVE CHANGED THE TWO OXYGEN SENSORS, THE COMPUTER, MODULE, STARTER, ALTERNATOR, ADDED FUEL ADDITIVES AND THE FUEL PUMP GAUGE SHOWS THAT IT IS STILL GOOD. MY CAR CURRENTLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 75 THOUSAND MILES. AT FIRST, THE CAR WOULD DIE BUT THE MECHANIC CHANGED THE MODULE AND IT SHUGS WHEN I PRESS ON THE GASS THEN IT WILL SPEED UP. ALSO, THE A/C IS NOT COOLING PROPERLY ONLY WHEN IT IS NICE AND FRESH OUTSIDE. I LIVE IN A CITY WHERE THE TEMPATURE IS OVER 100 DEGREES. THE A/C SYSTEM SHOWS THAT THE COMPRESSOR AND THE FREON IS GOOD. WHEN THE A/C IS ON THE CAR STARTS TO ACT OUT AND WHEN IT IS OFF THE START RUNS SMOOTHLY. PLEASE HELP ME ELIMINATE THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I AM CURRENTLY A SINGLE MOTHER AND UNIVERSITY STUDENT WHO HAS LIMITED AMOUNT OF MONEY AND IS AFRAID THAT ONE OF THESE DAYS MY DAUGHTER AND ME WILL GET INTO AN ACCIDENT . I HAVE ALREADY HAD APPROXIMATELY THREE ENCOUNTERS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION IN READING MY PROBLEM.

Hello,
High outside or ambient temperatures will give false readings when it comes to A/C system charge. I can almost assure you that your A/C needs a competent service center. The system charge needs to be recovered. A leak test should be performed, repairs made if needed and then the system evacuated and recharged. That will get you cold air.
The Enhanced traction system will also light the check engine light under certain conditions. If you have an Autozone they will plug in and tell you what the codes are that are lighting the check engine lamp. The ETS light on usually means that system has turned itself off.
It sure woud'nt hurt to get the brakes checked on your car.
Warning lights like these dont always mean serious trouble. But you do need someone to check them out.
Good luck, Best Wishes

Reply to bfox4546's Post: The a/c system has already been flushed and cleaned. What I neeed to know is why is my car shugs until I press the gas then it will go. The RPM does not change or kick in; it stays in at a certain RPM. My father has already put new brakes on the car and the maintenance of the car is always current. Would it be possible if a sensor is making it act like that and if it is, which one? I appreciate the response and would like more information. Thank you.
