I have a 97 Suburban 6.5 diesel and abruptly it lost all of the power and runs extremely rough. The engine starts after several attempts and it seems like the injectors are operating intermittently it surges up and down in speed. As soon as this started black smoke just rolls out the exhaust. I tried to put injector cleaner into the tank and as before it would run with smoke and then do the surge and then back to smoking. Any ideas out there on how to troubleshoot?

Reply to Michael's Post: The check engine light is on. Recently had a oil change but other than that it has been running good. Like I said it just lost all power and runs extremely rough. It pulled itself home but that is about the end of it.

Thanks

Relist: I still need help.
97 Chevy Suburban 2500 Diesel 6.5.

Driving along the motor started smoking and idling real rough. The oil pressure is good and I cannot hear any thing other than the normal diesel sounds.

I put in injector cleaner and let it idle, like I said it smokes and takes a short period of increase in engine speed and then throws a lot of smoke and bogs back down. the power is for shit cannot pull itself off a pot.

This may be as simple as changing the fuel filter but I suggest you get the codes retrieved as they will isolate the issue to a specific circuit or issue for further diagnosis. Most any parts store will check codes for FREE if you can get to one.I will post the code list for you.Once we have the codes we can do whatever is required to repair this.I have all the specs and procedures for anything from Fuel filter replacement to injector pump adjustments and more right here at my fingertips. To just start replacing parts or going through all the sensors and engine control items that can cause this would be too time consuming and may still not reveal the issue.I would definately change that filter first though if you have not done so recently.

See Figure 8

  1. Remove the fuel tank cap to release any pressure or vacuum in the tank.

  2. If equipped, remove the upper intake manifold cover.

  3. Open the air bleed valve on top of the filter assembly.

  4. Spin off the element nut at the top of the filter-it looks like a large knurled knob.

  5. Lift the filter element out of the header assembly.

To install:

  1. Clean the mating surfaces on the header assembly and the filter. Align the widest key slot in the element cap with that in the header assembly, push the element down until the two surfaces make contact, then tighten the nut by hand.

  1. Open the air bleed valve on top of the filter assembly. Connect a hose to the bleeder valve and insert the other end into a suitable glass container.

  2. Disconnect the fuel injection pump shut-down solenoid wire or the FUEL SOL relay center fuse (whichever applies to your vehicle, then crank the engine in 10-15 second intervals until clear, clean fuel is coming out of the hose.

Wait about one minute between cranking intervals!

  1. Remove the hose and close the bleeder valve.

  2. Connect the shut-down solenoid wire or fuse and install the fuel cap. Start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes. Check for leaks.
